Weipa Cape York - Allfedup Gone Fishing Charter:

Fishing Weipa has always been on Team Poseidon's radar. With a good wet over 2007/8 the opportunity to visit and fish Weipa at the end of the 2008 big wet couldn't be missed.

Dave Armstrong and I scheduled to fish with Jim Borthwick of Allfedupgonefishing for 5 days in early April 2008.

Jim is a local born and breed Weipa resident and knows the fish ground like the back of his hand. This experience is vital once you arrive and survey the vast estuary and river system available at Weipa. The fact that the estuaries generally ends up as mud banks or have nasty rock bars that cannot be seen until low tide reinforced the fact that a local guide is vital at Weipa. Jim uses a beautiful 5.9m Plate Alloy Customcraft with ample casting area to cater for 3 fishermen using lures or 4 baitfishing.

Dave and I came to Weipa to lure fish and had invested in 2 brand new Shimano Chrongraph baitcasters. Dave matched his with a Daiwa 5' 10" Sicstick rod whilst I retained my trusty Poseidon 5' 8" Castpro (with shortened butt length).

The weather was quite changeable and the wet had not finished with big Rain storms (matched with thunder and lightening throughout our stay). The tides were also not to our favour and quite poor. However, this didn't dampen our prospects and became evident when within the first 2 minutes of fishing on Day 1 - Dave sighted a huge Threadfin Salmon over 1mtr in length and at first cast was smoked by the steam train Thready.

The days followed a similar pattern with overcast and cool mornings changing to sunny and very hot humid days by 10am (average temps 30 degrees / 80-90 humidity / 1018 barometer). It was in these conditions with constant water temperatures of 29 degrees that the fishing came alive. The build up of afternoon storms culminated with torrential rain, thunder & lightening resulted in the fish going off the bite.

Armed with Lively Lure Shallow Gold Mullet and Bleeding Mullet lures we peppered each spot Jim suggested. Without fail we found and caught Barra. The average Barra was 45 - 53cm but we found many larger fish up and over 1mtr. It was the aggressiveness of the smaller Barra that surprised both Dave and I. They smashed the lures and put up gallant fights before being released. Each day we found the fish aggressively active leaving the safety of the back water and mangrove cover to hunt prey.

Jim found Barra each day even when conditions were not ideal. Regardless we managed to catch an average of 70 Barra per day. We lost many Big Barra as they traversed back to the safety of Mangrove cover. The biggest Barra landed being 86cm.

We caught 350+ Barra, 20+ Threadfin Salmon, numerous Queenies in the five days but the highlight must be the 71cm (7kg) TripleTail that Dave caught. Dave had been using a PrawnStar in an attempt to lure a Jack from the Mangroves. With the weather changing Jim decided we should move. On route to our new location we past two large floating trees' in the main river channels. Jim suggested this was perfect for casting for the illusive TripleTail. We both cast around the floating tree. Second cast Dave was hit and the line peeled off his new Shimano Chrongraph with 6.9kg Posiedon Briad. Jim got very excited once the fish broke the surface and revealed it was a large TripleTail. What a fish and a credit to Dave for landing. Well done mate!.

Anyone intending to fish Weipa could not go past Jim and All Fed Up Gone Fishing . Do yourself a favour and book Jim. Its great value and you won't be disappointed. When we go back we will be using Allfedupgonefishing Charters!
