Princess Charlotte Bay Queensland Australia - MV Boomerang Charter

I returned from my first excursion to North Queensland where I joined the MV Boomerang at Princess Charlotte Bay in May 2003. I chose the MV Boomerang for two reasons. Firstly the cost. The fact that you get 7 days and 7 nights living aboard with all food, soft drinks, bait and use of a tinny on a twin share basis is excellent value. Secondly the itinerary, because it gave ample opportunity for River, Estuary and Reef fishing. Particularly as having not been on an extended tour before, I wanted to try all forms off tropical fishing.

I specifically wanted to go Barra fishing and even with the poor wet season I wasn't disappointed. My first Barra and Mangrove Jack. On the second day down Salt Water creek I caught my first and second Barra.  We had drifted for 1km casting into the snags when I changed to a Storm Plastic. The result was one undersize Barra at 40cm and the second a legally sized 60cm beauty. Five minutes later I caught my first Mangrove Jack again on the Storm Plastic and again a 45cm beauty.

On day three I was trying out a Mann's Stretch 10 lure when the silence was broken by a huge splash and woof and my rod buckled over and line peel off from my reel. I had hooked into a large 10kg Barra that had no intention of coming anywhere near the tinny. The little experience I had gained from my previous day's captures was not enough and I was no match for the Barra on the end on my line.Myself catching a Trevally. It quickly moved back into the snags and within 30 seconds was gone along with lure. Myself catching a Esturary Cod. I sat back down (cursing myself) but thinking if this was Barra fishing in a poor season just how magnificent it must be after a big wet season. I had lost a good fish but still felt hugely satisfied that on my first Barra trip I had attained a 2:1 strike rate.

The fishing schedule aboard the MV Boomerang can be as hectic or leisurely as you want. Most days we commenced fishing at day break fishing the first 2.5 hours before returning for Breakfast. Then straight back out for a further 3 hour session before returning for lunch and a short spell on board checking rigs and tackle before resuming the 3pm afternoon session until dusk. After dinner lines were again wet over the stern of the MV Boomerang consuming the odd ale. Again not without the odd legally sized Fingermark being wrestled aboard.Myself catching a Nannygai.

Alan, Barbara and Emily go out off their way to ensure you maximize your fishing experience.   Even though we ventured out to the reefs on a rather than ideal day for fishing. We still caught significant quantity and quality of fish.

At the outset I was skeptical, but I will state categorically that this is one great trip for any fisherman. It represents exceptional value and fantastic fun and a trip I would fully recommend!
