Mandurah WA Australia - Aqualib Charter

The strong southerly winds restricted offshore fishing over the 2003 Christmas holidays. However, I managed to slip in a couple of days beach fishing for Tailor around Mandurah south of Rockingham WA. Using Pilchards and Ganged hooks it is quite easy to locate troughs on many of the beaches around Mandurah and I found early morning fishing most productive with a good bag caught on most outings.

Steve Thomas was grateful enough to fit me in on 12 hours notice on his charter boat "Aqualib" a 50 foot charter boat operating out of Mandurah.  We met at Mandurah boat harbour at 6.00am and Steve outlined the weather conditions were less than ideal with a strong South Easterly forecast to blow at 17 - 20 knots and a swell of 1.8m. He gave the option to cancel the days fishing but all agreed we would venture out regardless.

We travelled 30 nautical miles down coast towards Bunbury to some of Steve's secret Dhufish fishing grounds. Using a dual 3/0 rig on 80lb mono on a trusty Alvey reel we drifted across several lumps in 35m of water in search of large Dhufish. Our bait was a whole mullet fillet bottom bounced using 32oz of lead.

It wasn't long before someone hooked and landed a good sized Dhufish. Weighing in at Beauty & the Beast - The 54cm King George Whiting is the BEAUTY17kg - it was a Beauty. We continued to move and drift across several Dhufish grounds when eventually I felt a good thud/thud on my rod. I struck and hooked the fish which continued to fight hard on its retrieval to the surface. Steve used a net to land the fish onto the boat and to my amazement, I had caught the largest King George Whiting of my fishing career. A 54cm monster and an absolute beauty.

We continued fishing in the rough weather until 2pm when within 5 minutes 2 Hugh runs were encountered. The first ran out at 45 degrees to Port from the stern creating havoc as lines were quickly retrieved in an attempt to clear the path for the rogue fish. Within seconds the fish was gone apparently biting its way through the 80lb mono. The next from the Port side ran to the Stern peeling off line at freight train speed and causing the Alvey to spin like a lit Catherine wheel on fireworks night. A 8 foot Mako shark suddenly surfaced and leapt out of the sea rolling as it landed with a Hugh splash. The Mako continued to draw line for a further 3 minutes until it too finally broke free. It goes to prove you can never be too sure what you'll hook into.

All in all it was a great days fishing and a good result given the conditions. "Aqualib Marine Charters" runs most days out of Mandurah WA. Contact details are Tel:(08) 9586 9778. Give them a go if you are in the area and want a good solid days fishing.
