Magnetic Island - Queensland Australia

Magnetic Island is one of my favorite places to fish. I first went there on my Honeymoon and ended up extending my stay three times to get more fishing in. This was in the days before the new marine &  when the ferry ran from Townville to Picnic Bay pier. It was from here on many of my first trips to Magnetic Island that I would fish. I would ventured down to the Picnic Bay jetty most mornings at sunrise to collect herring for live bait and then set them adrift for Spanish Mackerel.

I still remember my wife arriving like clockwork at 8.20am each morning with coffee and a egg and bacon sandwich's. It was one such morning my reel went off and the rod doubled in two as line sped off back towards Townsville. After 45 minutes of maneuvering around the ferry shed I landed my first Spanish Mackerel. A nice 8kg fish. I still believe the photograph adorns the Picnic Bay Tackle Shop wall of glory not that mine was that big in comparison to many that had been caught from this pier.Dad in 2000 with a nice Queenfish - Magnetic Is Qld

It was here I met John and Robyn from Dunoon Resort. They manage the Picnic Bay resort and John is found most mornings out on the pier or caught watching others on the pier with his binoculars. We stayed at Dunoon most trips thereafter (not only because its a great place to stay) because of its great proximity to the pier. The pier would never fail if herring were around and I continued to catch great quality fish in the later years. I've seen John tussle Mackerel as big as himself up onto the pier and I will state now he is one fine angler (these fish are big!).

This became part of the reason my Mother and Father later retired to Magnetic Island. They purchased on the north side of the island at Horseshoe Bay. A magical beach and fishing haven for those with a boat. It wasn't long before Dad & I purchased a 4m tinny and made our way around the bay looking for the hot spots. We found 2 great places to fish in Horseshoe Bay. The first on the NW side of the boat ramp to a large Dad and I in 2000 with a nice Golden Trevally caught at Magnetic Island QLDrock easily seen at low tide. Just follow the coast around the beach toward the rock face. Keep an eye out as its only 150m off shore and hard to see at high tide. But once located - hang on as big Mackerel are regularly found here. The second and our favorite spot is out NNE from the boat ramp towards the oyster leases. Basically you follow the beach the opposite way but watch out for the old hermit. Just before you pass around the head back in the thermal current is where we have had some of greatest catches. Sheltered from the strong currents the warmer waters are easily identifiable. We usually anchored 100 from the point and the beach over the edge of the reef. It is here that attract schools of Doggie Mackerel and large Queenfish and Golden Trevally. The big cod were always a bugger - if you didn't get them turned before they got back into their hole then cut the line. They weren't moving.

It didn't really matter what the tide was or what time of day we went. At least one of us would hook into something big.

Visiting Magnetic Island is always great. Whether fishing from the Picnic Bay Pier or hiring a boat from Barnacle Bill at Horseshoe Bay - I generally always came back with at least one big fish.
