Fishing Australia:

Fishing has always been a key part of live in our family. My father a keen angler himself, commenced my fishing education at a very early age. Myself in 1967 Fishing for TroutI say its an education because in my experience, fishing is an evolutionary process. I learn something new nearly every time I go out. Whether from the pier, beach, rocks or boat. Something new always seems to present itself. Its also a past time that will always bridge the generation gap. This in itself providing the conduit for information transfer from old to young (not that the oldies can't be taught a trick or to from the youngsters). When fishing and regardless of age, inevitably conversions always sparks up around what been caught (or in most cases lost) the tide, weather and tackle.

My education started back in England. Dad and I fishing for Trout in 1967My father worked most Saturday's. So it was my brother and my responsibility to catch the live bait from the Thames River for the next mornings excursion Pike fishing. The process involved catching Gudgeon (mainly using maggots) and storing them in a bucket until we were collected. The next morning off we would go. English Pike fishing is quite similar to other pelagic fishing. Even today my father still pulls out the trusty Pike float used some 40 years ago to drift live herring out on the tide to attract large Spaniard's.

I love fishing with my father and my children. Although my wife still hasn't forgiven me for taking my fishing rods away on our honeymoon to Magnetic Island. I caught my first Spanish Mackerel off the Picnic Bay pier on Magnetic Island early one morning whilst on our honeymoon. Dad and I in 2000 with a nice Golden Trevally caught at Magnetic Island QLD

I can also still remember my eldest boy catching his first kilogram Bream at Tuncurry NSW on live prawn. He was only 6. The little outfit bent over in double as the line peeled off his spinning reel and speed off down the foreshore. He landed the fish and wouldn't let go of the fish until he had carried it back to the caravan park for tea. In truth I ate the fish and the kids got fish fingers, but the seed was set and today he too enjoys fishing.

I also recall taking my second daughter at age 2 fishing off the Hervey Bay pier. It was 4.30am and she woke from her sleep to find me skulking around the house getting ready to go fishing. She protested that she wanted to go, so off we went. I turned up on the pier with fishing gear and daughter in her stroller. It's a long walk down to the end of the Hervey Bay pier. But I raised a smile off nearly all I passed as we proceeded on our walk to the pier end. Strapped into her stroller - I gave her the little spinning rod with the herring jig. She sat for hours jiggling the rod up and down and screaming out each time she connected with a new batch of herring. It was quite amusing - my rods where out with the live bait. So it gave me plenty of opportunity to assist her. She too found the pleasure of fishing, although she still will not come out on the boat.

I don't proclaim to be an expert - I just  enjoy getting out and having a go. It doesn't really matter if I catch a fish or not. However, I do like my gear in good condition and that why I developed RODSOCK.
