Gove NT Australia - Top End Expeditions

I joined the Fish Trex Film crew in Brisbane for a week of fishing around Arnhem land at the end of February 2005. They were embarking on a 7 day adventure to make a film on fishing the Arnhem land wilderness. I joined my good friend Graham Foley and Rod Harrison two very capable anglers on what proposed to be a week of spectacular fishing in some of the remotest areas around Arnhem land.1 of 2 Top End Expeditions AMM Runabouts

We flew to Nhulunbuy (Gove) in the Northern Territory were we meet our host Ian Murphy of Top End Expeditions and joined his 56' mother ship Auriga Bay on the Saturday evening before departing the next morning.  Top End Expeditions operates 2 Australian Master Marine 23' custom built runabouts and these quickly took us to our first spot for some memorable Tuna and Mackerel fishing. The fish are big and flicking popper amongst the bait fish resulted in spectacular strikes. Fish Trek Chef - Dean with a nice GT

We moored in Elizabeth Bay the first night before heading out the next morning for more Mackerel and GT's. Poppers and deep diving lures resulted in some excellent fish as Dean our chef proves (yet again!)

Just some of the Spectacular Scenery and Great Fishing AreasThe next 6 days were spend traveling around the pristine waters of North-East Arnhem land. The scenery is spectacular and the fishing ain't half bad!Ian Murphy with one of several Barra caught on this day!

Murph is not only a experienced guide but a top angler holding several NT records. To proved it Murph took me to some previously un-fished creeks were he proceeded to hook up to several Barra and Mangrove Jacks, some just 2' off the stern of the boat.

Myself I had to revert to casting into and around the mangroves to hook up! This nice Mangrove Jack gave me a hell of a time before finally deciding to come aboard. The result a nice QueeniePoseidon Castpro under load

Queenies were also plentiful and even fishing from a sandy spit on low tide resulted in numerous hook ups on poppers and soft plastics.

We fished the week with lures provided by Paul Hunt of River N Sea lures. Previously unused by myself they quickly gained great respect after numerous hook ups with several lures now being destined to end up in my tackle box.

Even fishing the ebbing tides before dusk resulted in very large GT's and Queenies. Another top Queenie taken on a River N Sea Popper. This Queenie was taken using another of the River N Sea poppers on a Poseidon Castpro.

Half a big Mac - Err no thanks!

This Spanish Mackerel took a Purple Strike Zone Deep Diving lure on a Poseidon Boatpro. Only problem was the sharks took an equal liking to my hooked Big Mac and only half of the fish was recovered.

All in all the trip was a great success and I'm sure the resulting film will provide the proof. Top End Expeditions offer a fantastic trip and one I would totally recommend. Murph goes out of his way to ensure you catch the fish you are targeting. He knows the area extremely well and has many GPS marks for every condition to ensure you maximise your catch rate. He'll find the fish - it's up to you to land them!

I for one will be back - hopefully soon.
