Daly River - Northern Territory Australia

Although Dad and I were originally scheduled to fish the Daly River at the end of March 2004. The big wet delayed the trip by 5 weeks and we rescheduled for early May 2004. Daly River - May 2004Whilst the run off was all but over by the time we set eyes on the Daly River the fishing was still the best many had seen in years. We were in Barramundi heaven.

We had arrived at Darwin Airport at 9.30pm on a flight from Cairns. We did the essential shopping and immediately drove the 230kms eventually arriving at the Daly River Crossing at around 1.30am. After  an uncomfortable nights sleep in the car outside the Daly Crossing Pub we drove the short 14kms down the Woolianna dirt road and arrived at Woolianna on the Daly River at 7am.  We unloaded and proceed to our hire boat and by 9.30am we were in the water and trolling down stream. The water was on the outgoing tide and moving quite fast with the 7.70m tide ebbingDad and his 1st Barra - 62cm. The river was magnificent condition and it wasn't long before Dad had hooked and landed his first Barra a credible 62cm taken on a Classic lure. The smile tells it all!

Although many anglers were catching 1 metre plus Barra trolling lures at the 'S' Bends some 18km down stream. We continued to troll along the Golden Mile sometimes stopping to float a Cherabin in many of the eddy's along this stretch of river. At one location the float had not gone passed the end of the boat before it bobbed and disappeared. The fish headed straight to the snags close to the boat and broke free. I re-set the rig and drifted a second large Cherabin along the same path with the float disappearing and reel screaming as line was drawn off. Fortunately this time the large fish headed to the middle of the river were upon turning it's head it then headed straight back towards the bank and the snags. 92cm (20lb) Daly River Barra (Released)Retrieving the line furiously I stopped the fish before the snags. It rolled creating a Hugh swell allowing me to retrieve and draw the fish into the boat. It was a beautiful 92cm Barra nudging 20lb in the old scale (this fish was revived and released unharmed).

We trolled and hooked considerably larger fish in the Golden Mile and 'S' Bend areas using Tilsan and Lively Mullet lures in Green and Black/Red patterns. The fishing was exceptionally good all week with a fellow angler catching and releasing a 1.42m monster weighing in at 48lbs. Daily reports of fish over 100cm were being reported. However on a sad note it was disappointing to see so many large fish not being released. We kept one 60cm fish for the week and this provided 2 meals with large servings for Dad and I.One of many 60cm Barra taken at the 'S' Bend Daly River

Our aim for the week was not only to catch big Barra, but to test the new range of rod and reels under development. This was undertaken quite easily and the rods and reels out performed our expectations.

On a further sad note - we received news Dad's Mum had passed away whilst we were fishing at the Daly River. A keen and capable Trout angler. RIP - Violet Hazelgrove (aged 88 years)
